JOB SUMMARY: The Robotics and Automation Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and supporting robotic and automated manufacturing systems.
This role ensures automation equipment, including robots, conveyors, sensors, and control systems, operates safely and efficiently.
The position provides hands-on technical support for production and works under the direction of engineering to support system performance, reliability, and continuous improvement efforts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
AUTOMATION & ROBOTICS EQUIPMENT SUPPORT: (PRIMARY FOCUS):
- Maintain and troubleshoot robotic systems, end-of-arm tooling (EOAT), conveyors, and automated work cells.
- Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and basic control system issues.
- Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on automation equipment Programming Support & System Adjustments.
- Perform basic robot and automation program adjustments (e.g., position touch-ups, minor logic edits) within defined parameters.
- Assist engineering with system setup, programming changes, and equipment modifications.
- Troubleshoot system faults and escalate complex programming or integration issues System Integration & Controls Support.
- Assist with integration of automation systems with molding machines, packaging systems, and PLC controlled equipment.
- Support setup and troubleshooting of sensors, vision systems, and communication networks.
- Troubleshoot industrial communication protocols (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus).
TESTING & PERFORMANCE MONITORING:
- Conduct testing to verify proper function of automation systems and monitor system performance and identify issues affecting production efficiency.
- Support efforts to improve uptime, cycle time, and system reliability.
PRODUCTION & CROSS-FUNCTIONAL SUPPORT:
- Work closely with production, maintenance, and engineering teams to support daily operations.
- Assist with equipment startup, changeovers, and system recovery.
- Respond to automation-related downtime and support rapid issue resolution.
TRAINING & DOCUMENTATION:
- Assist in training operators and maintenance personnel on safe and proper use of automation systems.
- Maintain documentation of system changes, backups, and maintenance activities.
SAFETY & COMPLIANCE:
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures, including lockout/tagout (LOTO).
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Identify and report safety hazards, incidents, and near misses.
GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned, consistent with business needs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Working knowledge of industrial robotics and automation systems.
- Mechanical, electrical, and pneumatic troubleshooting skills and basic understanding of PLCs and HMI systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, and ladder logic.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to follow technical instructions and work under direction.
- Ability to communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to understand and follow all departmental and company safety rules.
- Ability to understand Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Training in lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.
- Ability to learn and follow applicable ISO procedures and standards.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate’s degree or technical certification in Mechatronics, Electrical Technology, Industrial Automation, or related field, or equivalent experience.
- 2-5 years of experience in robotics, automation, or industrial maintenance.
- Experience with industrial robots (e.g., FANUC, Yaskawa, ABB, Universal Robots).
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English as required to safely perform job duties.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with PLC troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley preferred).
- Experience in plastics manufacturing or similar industrial environment.
- Familiarity with vision systems and automated inspection equipment.
